I.U.P.A. Local Indian River Corrections Deputies Association, #6083 Members participated in the Let’s Talk Program, which provides children with an insight into the criminal justice system and helps them to avoid involvement in the system.
Indian River County Sheriff’s Office posted on social media, “The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office successfully hosted the first annual ‘Let’s Talk’ program in collaboration with Team Success and Hope for Families. Geared towards adolescents aged 12-18, this initiative aims to provide insight into the criminal justice system, with a central focus on equipping young individuals to circumvent involvement in the system and develop into proactive citizens. Emphasizing a ‘prevention before intervention’ approach.”
They continued, “The program features a panel of dedicated educators who generously contributed their time to engage directly with the youth, stressing the availability of support resources and ensuring them that they are never alone in their journey. The panel included Assistant State Attorney Mr. Robert Stone, School Board Vice Chair Dr. Peggy Jones, Mental Health Association, Tykes and Teens, Two Parent Advisers; Angie Gaines and Tanaka Roxbury, and Motivational Speaker Eric Brown.”
The post continued, “During a round-table discussion, the children directly exchanged with Inmate Lattimore and Inmate Douglas. Both inmates openly shared their stories and expressed their regretted decisions, which led to their current situation. This open dialogue provided the children with valuable insights into the inmates’ perspectives. The parents took the opportunity to engage in a discussion with the Mental Health Association to acquire valuable information and gain insight into the resources available for seeking support.”
Each week, the I.U.P.A. Briefing Room features a photo that exemplifies the valuable part of the community that our Law Enforcement Officers all across the U.S. are and their positive impact as well as their dedication, service, and sacrifice.
